ISG Completes Balm Filler Upgrade

ISG completes installation and start-up of Balm Filler project

5/8/03 -- ISG announced today that it had completed installation and start-up of a controls upgrade project for a local pharmaceutical company involving a machine used to fill containers with pain relief balm material.  The project involved documenting the existing wiring, and then replacing the controls and adding and replacing various sensors.

New functionality was added allowing operators more control of auxiliary heating processes.  Diagnostic logic was included to help plant technicians determine causes of mechanical failures.  Preventive interlocks were added to reduce the likelihood of one fault causing other failures to occur.

In just three weeks since the initial installation, the plant maintenance supervisor commented that they had only one instance where there was a blow seal failure.  This was a problem that previously occurred sometimes several times in a single shift.

ISG implemented the project using a Siemens S7-200 PLC, Cutler Hammer operator controls, along with SICK photoelectric and proximity sensors.  A complete documentation package is being provided, which should help to reduce the duration of future downtime occurrences.
